WHO WE ARE Mobility Worldwide (formally Personal Energy Transportation, or PET) an organization dedicated to providing mobility via a three-wheeled, all terrain wheelchair, operated by hand power. Built by a faith-based, non-profit, volunteer organization, Mobility Carts are delivered at no cost to people in developing countries who have lost the use of their legs due to birth defects, polio, diabetes, spinal cord injuries, landmines, or war.
OUR MISSION Our mission is to provide Mobility Carts specialty wheelchairs at no cost to individuals with disabilities who live in poor and underdeveloped countries and who have no appropriate means of mobility by:
- Operating a manufacturing site to construct Mobility Carts;
- Educating the public about the great need of disabled and disadvantaged persons;
- Raising funds to support the construction and delivery of the vehicles;
- Disseminating the vehicles to the applicants through international agencies/sponsors.
THE NEED The World Health Organization (2003) estimates that 20 million people who need a wheelchair do not have one. Most will never have a proper wheelchair for navigating the countryside and villages in which they live. There are many causes for their disability, from diseases to accidents to even landmines. Landmines alone kill or injure 15,000 to 20,000 people annually, including civilians and soldiers. It is estimated that 60-100 million landmines remain in at least 70 countries (World Health Organization, 2003). And even our nearest neighboring country, Mexico, is estimated to have 10 million people with diabetes and related health issues such as vision problems and limb loss (“Medical News Today,” November 15, 2007).
